Description

The Sangumburi Crater in Jeju is a parasite crater of Hallasan Mountain; unlike other craters, this is found on flats called Sangumburi in Jeju language. This crater has outer girth of 2,067m and inner girth of 756m. The depth is 100 ~ 146m. The inside of this crater is shaped like a cone, and the bottom covers an area of 32,000 square meters. This crater did not extravasate, but only a deep hole was made during its eruption. Ejecta were scattered all over the place, and only a little amount lies around. Even though this crater is bigger than Baengnokdam Lake (crater lake) in terms of diameter and depth, there is no water in it because water flows into the see-through basalt strata on its inner wall. The geologist calls this kind of crater maar. This type of crater is rare all over the world, including the Sangumburi Crater in Korea. This crater is highly valuable for researching plants because of the well-preserved group of plants therein.
