Description

Oriental White Oak grows in China, Taiwan, and Japan. The Oriental White Oak of Byeongsan-ri is about 600 years old, with height of 13.8m and girth of 3.39m. This tree stands on a flat ground at the back of the town and its leaves and branches are well-developed. It is presumed to have been planted by a man named Hwang Jeon of the Changwon Hwang clan when he was assigned to this village as a government official in the 8th year of the reign of King Sejong during the Joseon Dynasty (1426). Villagers have performed a sacrificial ritual for this tree on January 15th wishing for the well-being of the town and good harvest. Since the Oriental White Oak of Byeongsan-ri has been under our ancestors' care and protection and is biologically valuable, it is designated and protected as a Natural Monument.
