Description

Cork Oak grows in Japan, China, and Korea. As a characteristic of the tree, cork develops on branches and it grows well in a dry place facing the south or in a rocky place, especially in Gangwon-do and Gyeongsangbuk-do. The bark of this tree is used as cork, and the fruits are used for making jelly. The cork oak tree is about 500 years old, with height of 22.5m and girth of 5.4m. The tree is the strongest one among all cork oak trees that are under protection, and it also has a beautiful appearance. Villagers mended the paths of rice paddy and weeded on the best day of July. After that, they performed a sacrificial ritual for the tree and shared the food. Moreover, they still believe that there will be a good harvest when a cuckoo sings on the branch of this tree. Since the cork oak of Daegok-ri in Andong has been under our ancestors' care and protection and is historically valuable, it is designated and protected as a Natural Monument.
