Description

The Multi-stem Pine is a kind of pine tree but a little different from other kinds of pine trees in shape. With the tree branching into many pieces at the base, the main branch is indistinguishable from the branches. Its overall appearance also resembles an unfolded umbrella. The multi-stem pine of Sanghyeon-ri is in the middle of the rice field, which is on the other side of the village. This tree is about 500 years old, with height of 15.3m and girth of 2.23~5.17m. Sometimes, it seems to be two pine trees because it branches into many pieces at the base. It is also called Tapsong, meaning pine tree that looks like a tower. Villagers believed that, if someone hurt this tree or even rack up its fallen leaves, he will be punished by the heavens because the tree has long been worshipped by the local community as a village guardian. On the 15th day of the New Year according to the lunar calendar, villagers make sacrifices to this tree for peace and good harvest. Since the multi-stem pine of Sanghyeon-ri is biologically valuable, it is designated and conserved as a Natural Monument.
