Description

Distributed in Japan, Taiwan, and China, Machilus of Changseondo Island, Namhae grows along the coast. Since the tree is beautiful, it is used as garden tree or park tree and the tree is also used as windbreak. The machilus is about 500 years old, with height of 8.6m. It stands in the rice field, and its branches are divided into 11 parts. Legend has it that an old couple lived in this village 500 years ago caught a big fish whose belly contained seeds and they sowed the seeds in the front yard, which grew into today’s Machilus. The tree has long been worshipped by the local community as a village guardian. Since the machilus of Changseondo Island is biologically valuable and has thrived under the attention and care of our ancestors for a long time, it is designated and protected as a Natural Monument.
