Description
The Japanese Hackberry belongs to the Elm family and is called Pongnamu or Pogunamu in the southern province. According to feng shui, it was planted to protect a reservoir or block the winds. The Japanese hackberry of Gupo-dong is about 500 years old, with height of 18.2m and girth of 5.74m and is located in a place where Nakdonggang River can be seen at a glance. The tree has long been worshipped by the local community as a village guardian. On the 15th day of the New Year, villagers pray to this tree for peace and prosperity. Since the Japanese hackberry of Gupo-dong is biologically valuable and has been preserved well by our ancestors for a long time, it is designated and protected as a Natural Monument.
