Description

A ginkgo tree can be as old as a fossil. Distributed in Japan, China, and Korea, the ginkgo tree was introduced along with Confucianism and Buddhism from China. The tree has beautiful leaves in autumn, undamaged by harmful insects, and provides large, cool shade. Therefore, it is planted often as arbor or roadside tree. The Ginkgo Tree of Juam-ri is presumed to be about 1000 years old, with height of about 23m and girth of approximately 8.62m. This ginkgo tree is behind the village of Juam-ri. According to legend, a member of Jwapyeong Maeng Clan planted this ginkgo tree and it was at the time when King Seong (538) of the Baekje Dynasty moved to the new capital, Sabi. The villagers regard this ginkgo tree as a village guardian. Since the ginkgo tree Juam-ri, Buyeo is biologically valuable and has been preserved well by descendants for a long time, it is designated and protected as a Natural Monument.
