Description

Hardy camphor tree grows in a warm place in the south. Its flowers bloom from April to May, and its fruits ripen from July to September. Machilus grows on Ulleungdo Island, Jejudo Island, and southern islands, mainly along the coast. Stately and beautiful, it is used as a garden tree or a park tree. Hardy camphor tree and Machilus of Udo Island are about 20m tall. They are located in the rice field on the back of the village and composed of 3 Hardy camphor trees and 1 Machilus. The biggest among the 3 Japanese Cinnamons is about 400 years old. Their branches are spread on all sides so they look like a small forest. Villagers regarded them as a village guardian. Since the Hardy camphor tree and Machilus of Udo Island have grown under the attention and care of our ancestors for a long time, they are designated and protected as a Natural Monument.
