Description
Machilus is distributed in Japan, Taiwan, and China. In Korea in particular, it grows on Ulleungdo Island, Jejudo Island, and southern islands, mainly along the coast. Its bark is used for medicinal purposes. Stately and beautiful, it is used as a garden tree and a park tree. The Machilus of Chudo Island is about 500 years old, with height of 14.4m and girth of 2.2m. It grows on the slope near the sea, with its trunk divided in the middle: one facing toward the sea horizontally and the other facing upward. Villagers regarded it as a village guardian. The Machilus of Chudo Island is biologically valuable and has lived under the attention and care of our ancestors for a long time, it is designated and protected as a Natural Monument.
