The Black Pine of Samcheon-dong has tough leaves and the winter buds of a pine are usually red, but those of the black pine are grey-white. The tree resists the sea wind and grows along the south coast so it is called haesong, meaning sea pine and it is also called heuksong (black pine) in Korean because the bark of the tree is black. The black pine in Samcheon-dong grows inland and it is rarely found. This black pine is about 250 years old, with height of about 14m and girth of approximately 3.92m. The tree is presumed to have been planted to indicate the grave site of Indong Jang Clan. Since the black pine of Samcheon-dong is biologically valuable and has been preserved well by our ancestors, it is designated and protected as a Natural Monument.
