Description

Ballyongsong is a kind of pine tree. Ballyongsong in Dorip-ri is located 1.7km away from Baeksa-myeon Office, Icheon. The name Ballyongsong stemmed from the folklore that it is a dragon waiting to rise in the air. It is also called Mannyeonsong (10,000-year pine tree), because it is said to survive for 10,000 years. There is no way to measure the exact age of this tree. Its height is 4.25ms, and its girth is 1.83m. It branches into all directions at a height of 2m. The upward branches get twisted upside-down, looking like curious shape of a wiggly dragon. According to local legend, at the end of the Silla Dynasty, Doseon, a Buddhist monk, planted trees of this kind in Hamheung, Seoul, Gangwon-do, Gyeryongsan Mountain, and here to pray for the birth of great men. This pine tree is very old, with a unique shape. It has been designated as a Natural Monument for its great value as data for research.
