Description

Sand beach in Sagot, Baengnyeongdo Island is situated along the coast in Yonggipo Harbor, Baengnyeongdo Island. It looks like a sand beach, but it is actually a beach consisting of quartzite. At low tide, it is 2km long and 200m wide. Since the beach in Sagot is stuck with quartzite as firm as concrete floor, enough to use it as a natural airstrip by the UN troops during the Korean War as well as road for automobiles. The natural air field is comparable to an airstrip in Naples, Italy. Until the early part of 1989, it has been off-limits to civilians because it was a military control area. Therefore, it has been well-preserved. Since the restriction on access was lifted, however, it has become a resort destination in summer. Sabin in Sagot, Baengnyeongdo Island is very valuable for its unique characteristics in the process of formation and only one of two places with a natural airstrip. Therefore, it is designated and protected as a Natural Monument.
