Description
The Dangsong Pine Tree in Dangsan-ri, Geochang is about 600 years old, with height of 14.3m and girth of 4.1m. The bark is hard and has cracks. A vestige of the ax remains. Although one of the boughs that reach toward the south is dead, this tree generally has a good appearance. This tree is also called a holy tree, because it informed people of major incidents beforehand by crying aloud. For example, this tree is said to have cried for months, foretelling the Japanese annexation of Korea (1910), restoration of independence (1945), and Korean War (1950). On the 15th of January, the villagers perform a sacrificial ritual for the tree. They have also made a group for protecting this tree. Biologically valuable, the Dangsong Pine Tree in Dangsan-ri, Geochang is designated and protected as a Natural Monument.
