Description

Cheonnyeonsong, which means millennium pine in Korean, in Jirisan Mountain is an old pine tree about 500 years old, with height of 20m, girth of 4.3m, and branches spreading across 18m. The villagers living near the tree are looking after it, so it is in very good condition, maintaining a handsome appearance. The tree is known to have grown naturally some time before the Japanese Invasions in 1592. There is another old pine tree standing 20m apart from the tree. However, Cheonnyeonsong is older than the tree near it, so a rite is held for the tree to pray for the prosperity and well-being of the village. The tree is designated as a Natural Monument not only for its beauty and age but also for the legends surrounding it and its rarity and value as a symbol of folk belief.
