Description
There are 474 golden rain trees mixed with other trees covering a rectangular area about 1km long and 40-100m wide, along the southwest coast of Wando Island. The trees in Daemun-ri, Wando generates the biggest and oldest populations of the species in the country. It is one of the three major golden rain groves in Korea along with the golden rain grove in Anmyeondo Island (Natural Monument No. 138) and the golden rain, black jetbead grove in Balsan-ri, Pohang (Natural Monument No. 371) and is designated as a Natural Monument for its academic importance. The golden rain tree is a rare species around the world. It blooms in July and the flowers are yellow. The flowers are used as yellow pigment and the fruits are used as soap. In Korea, population of golden rain trees ranges from the mouth of Amnokgang River, to Chodo Island and Jangsangot Cape in Hwanghae-do, to Deokjeokdo Island in Gyeonggi-do, and to Yeongdong and Woraksan Mountain in Chungcheongbuk-do. It is an important indicator of the route of tree distribution via marine currents.
