Description

This famous tree, renowned for its beauty, prodigious growth, and impressive hemispheric crown, is the oldest known zelkova tree in Korea. The tree is said to have been planted by Kim Chung-nam, a member of the Dogang Kim Clan who first moved into this village, in memory of his elder brother Kim Chung-ro, who died while fighting for the country during the Japanese invasions of 1592-1598. The villagers call it the “General Tree.” It is believed to have divine powers so the villagers hold communal rites in front of the tree on the day of the first full moon of every year.
