Description

This trio of big old Machilus trees, standing close to one another with their crowns intertwined, almost looks like a single tree. Typical of the Machilus in the southern regions of Korea, the trees are beautiful and are still growing, giving forth new branches. The trees, which stand at the entrance to Sanseo Village, are said to have been planted sometime around 1580 by an ancestor of the Gyeongju Yi Clan who moved into the village. He planted trees in all four directions, but the trees at the village entrance are the only ones that remain today. They provide good shade and have great cultural and folkloristic value as a guardian symbol of the village.
