Description
The date plum tree of Yonggok-ri near Soemokgol is located at the former site of houses of the Gyeongju Kim Clan that were built here about 300 years ago. This date plum has been preserved as the village’s ritual tree, and even now, on the 15th day of the first lunar month, shamans perform a ritual to invoke the descent of the deity to the tree. Date plum is often used as “trunk wood” when grafting persimmon trees. As we can tell from an old saying, “Date plums are sweeter than persimmons” or “Seventy date plums are not as good as one persimmon”, the date plum is a familiar tree, but it is not easy to find big date plums. This date plum tree is the largest of its kind identified so far, and has great folkloric value.
