Description

The Hanging Painting of Beopjusa Temple in Gunwi is a large Buddhist altar painting created in 1714 by a group of nine monk-artists headed by Ducho and including Byeoncheol, Chigyeom and Siman. The painting, created on a large rectangular silk screen, (10 meters in height), portrays the Buddha in the form of a standing bodhisattva wearing a bejeweled crown, his arms wide open, holding a lotus spray in one hand. The principal Buddha forms the symbolic hand gesture (mudra) of the Rocana Buddha, and is elaborately decorated with a bejeweled crown and luxurious ornaments. Meanwhile, his two attendants, the Dragon King and the Dragon Maid, stand on each side of the Buddha, while two pairs of a Buddha accompanied by a bodhisattva stand on each side of the Buddha’s halo. Together with the use of ink wash techniques with light colors, elaborate and detailed brushstrokes, and a variety of decorative patterns, the image of the principal Buddha, as depicted wearing a bejeweled crown and holding a lotus spray, provides important clues for the study of new elements that appeared in Korean Buddhist painting during the late Joseon period.
