Description
The printing woodblocks for Jejin eonjip were re-engraved at Sinheungsa Temple in Gangwon-do in 1658 (the 9th year of the reign of King Hyojong). They are composed of three parts, namely, the Dharani Sutra of Buddha’s Mercy, Lists of the Collected Mantras, and Collection of Mantras. The first engraved version, which was made at Ansimsa Temple at Mudeungsan Mountain, Jeollado province in 1569 (in the 2nd year of the reign of King Seonjo), has unfortunately been lost. Thus, the printing blocks for the copy of Jejin eonjip kept at Sinheungsa Temple are the oldest extant versions to contain Buddhist mantras. This set of printing woodblocks is rare and unusual as it contains Hangeul, Chinese characters, and Sanskrit, making it a valuable resource for scholars of linguistics and the history of Korean Buddhism. Given that Sinheungsa Temple was located close to the East Sea and that the Suryukjae rite to the living beings of water and land was regularly performed in the region, the Printing Woodblocks for Jejin eonjip provide valuable geographical and cultural information on the local Buddhism of Gangwon-do.
