This Three-story Stone Pagoda is one of four pagodas remaining at the site of Seongjusa Temple in Boryeong. The temple itself was founded in 847 by the monk Nangye (aka Muyeom/800-888) and appears to have been closed during the late Joseon period. Judging by its structural design, the East Three-story Stone Pagoda and the other two three-tiered stone pagodas standing at the site are assumed to have been built by one and the same person during the late Unified Silla period. It is 4.1 meters high, and rests on a two-tier platform. The support stone hewn from a separate stone at the top of the platform and the door with lock and handle carved on the front and rear sides of its first tier are characteristic features of stone pagodas dating from late Unified Silla. The other two pagodas have already been designated as “Treasures”, and this one is also worthy of being considered for designation as a “Treasure” in recognition of its wonderful symmetry and strong aesthetic quality.
