Description

This celadon lidded bowl may have been used as a medicine container. It has height of 9.3 cm, mouth diameter of 7 cm, and base diameter of 5.5 cm. The top part of the lid is flat, whereas the lower part is rounded in a layer to form a step. A design of dragon and clouds is engraved at the very top, with the inscription “Sangyakguk,” the name of the government agency in charge of medicine during the Goryeo Dynasty, engraved horizontally on the lateral face where the exterior of the lid meets its lower part. The surface is full of thin cracks caused by the use of clear blue glaze. Though this piece is likely to have been made before the inlaying technique was widely used, it displays exquisite artistry in terms of the dragon and clouds on the top of the lid, upright shape of the bowl, and use of transparent glaze.
