Description

This incense burner has an expanded rim and a lid decorated with the sculpture of a turtle-dragon. The total height of the burner is 20.4 cm, whereas the burner itself has height of 10.2 cm and mouth diameter of 10.2 cm. This sculpture of the turtle-dragon with its head upheld in a sitting position is exquisite and dynamic. The turtle-dragon is an imaginary creature with the body of a turtle and the head of a dragon. The details of the hair on its face and the scales on the neck are depicted with fine engraved lines. A Chinese character meaning king (王) is engraved on the turtle’s back. The lid, shaped like a sitting turtle, has a hole at the bottom, letting the smoke come out through the widely open mouth when incense is burnt. A belt with flower and lightning designs is put around the lower part of the lid, and the burner has three supporting legs decorated with lion heads. The cloud designs are elegantly engraved around the body of the burner and the framed area in the base. The surface is shining with jade green glaze. The turtle-dragon reflects a darker blue color, however.
