Description
Made during the Goryeo Dynasty, this celadon ewer has height of 19.2 cm, mouth diameter of 3.4 cm, and base diameter of 10.3 cm. It is composed of a lid, a handle, a spout, and a spherical body. The design of this ewer shows a lotus flower bud sitting on top of lotus petals, with a circular loop attached to one side. The lotus flower designs surrounding the girth of the rim are coated with jade green glaze, displaying gorgeous beauty with elaborate details. A wave design is engraved in white inlay on the area where the spout is joined to the main body. The curves of the handle, which was made by twisting a pair of strings, match the overall look of the ewer well. There are two peony flowers on the front and the back: one carved in black inlay, and the other in white inlay. There are small flower buds underneath a peony flower in full bloom on both sides. The branches and leaves are inlaid in black. Unlike other ornamental peony designs, the designs of this ewer show flowers drawn with a highly picturesque technique. It is one of the rare masterpieces that display a combination of stylish lid, body filled with refreshing inlaid peony designs, and finely engraved details. It provides valuable information to those who study the development of celadon ware with inlaid designs.
