Description

Dating back to the Goryeo Dynasty, this celadon dish has height of 9.3 cm, mouth diameter of 16.1 cm, and base diameter of 6.1 cm. It is thin and slim, like a bronze plate. It spreads almost horizontally near the lower part and slightly widens upward. The inner wall of the bottom is round and flat. Six small cuts are made at the end of the lip to create a look of six leaves and flowers. It is believed to be a retrogression from the dishes featuring flower designs and which were made in the earlier Goryeo Period. On the inside of the dish are exquisite and superb inlaid designs, just like an embroidery work on a piece of fine silk. Three fishes are swimming around on the flat surface of the base. Painted on the side is a scene at a pond including lotus flowers, reeds, and water ducks, but there is no design at all on the exterior surface. Each design is subtle and elegant. At the same time, the designs are precise and delicate, as if every single one is hand-carved. The entire surface of the dish is softly coated with semi-transparent glaze. It has high value as the only celadon dish with both engraved and inlaid designs.
