Description
The Molds for Bronze Swords and Spears were excavated from an earthen-pit tomb (Tomb No. Galdong-1) in Gal-dong, Wanju, Jeollabuk-do. Historians are particularly interested in the exquisite form of the molds, one of which was used to make a slender bronze dagger and the other a bronze sword and bronze spear. These valuable relics, which bear traces of use, shed light on the production of bronze tools in Honam during the early Iron Age. So far, more than ten molds used to produce tools and weapons, dating from the Bronze to the Iron Age, have been found on the Korean Peninsula, but it is not clear where most of them were excavated. As these rare yet well-preserved molds are virtually the only ones about which anything is known, such as where and with what other artifacts they were excavated, they are an important material for studies on the techniques used to make bronze tools and weapons during that period.
