Description
This Goryeo celadon bottle dates from sometime in the 13th century and measures 8.1cm high, 0.7㎝ in mouth diameter and 2.7cm in bottom diameter. The small bottle is in the shape of a gourd with a long rhombus-like neck and a round body. The clear glazed surface shows small trapped air bubbles, and the bottle appears dark brown in areas where it was painted with iron oxide. The mouth rim of the bottle is painted in iron oxide, and the neck displays a large leaf design in relief with iron oxide applied to the raised areas. In the body section, lotus petal motifs are engraved across the entire surface. The bottom shows a symbol similar to an asterisk, with a Chinese character ‘gwan (宮)’ in incised carving in the center. This celadon bottle with an original shape is notable also for the use of iron oxide and relief carving. Although small in size, it stands out due to its original shape, underglaze design and the character inscription on the bottom.
