Description

These portraits depict 16 eminent Buddhist monks of the late Goryeo Period, including State Preceptor Bojo who was also known by his other name Jinul. The portrait of State Preceptor Bojo measures 77.4 cm wide and 134.8 cm long; he is wearing red outer vestment and blue robe and holding a stick in his right hand. The outer vestment and robe are depicted with outlines and shadings of colors on them. All the portraits are believed to have been painted by one artist, since their sizes and painting styles are identical. State Preceptor Bojo is seated at the center looking to the right, with seven monks on his left side looking at Bojo and eight monks on his right. These portraits were placed in Songgwangsa Temple in 1780 (fourth year of the reign of King Jeongjo of the Joseon Dynasty) and have been preserved in good condition. They show the typical style of the Buddhist portraits made in the mid-Joseon Period.
