This is a picture (measuring 57.0㎝ by 88.9㎝) depicting the scene of a birthday party of one of the three elders who were born in 1551 (the 6th year of King Myeongjong’s reign). It is composed of three parts, i.e. upper, middle, and lower parts. The upper part displays the title. Portrayed in the middle part are nine people including the three heroes, guests, and servants, with the natural landscape forming a nice backdrop. The lower part carries the list of the three heroes (their positions and clan names) and the meaning of the gathering. The scene of the gathering as depicted in the middle part features short lines of dots made in the An Gyeon style, which was the vogue in the early 16th Century. The black-white contrast is noticeable. The picture focuses on natural surroundings with people portrayed as small beings, suggesting that it was made in the 17th Century (1626 or the 4th year of King Injo’s reign) following the 16th Century trend. This genre painting shows part of the daily lives of people from the noble class. It tells us when it was made, thereby serving as a precious material for those studying the history of local paintings.
