Description
This painting depicts a country house at Jirisan Mountain, where Jeong Yeo-chang (1450-1504) stayed for a while studying Confucianism and the Five Classics. Jeong Yeo-chang passed the state examination in 1483 (14th year of King Seongjong’s reign) and served in various government posts as a civil official during the early Joseon Period. This painting was created in 1643 (21st year of King Injo’s reign) by Yi Jing, a famous artist during the Joseon Period, at the request of the Jeong Family since the house was ruined over time. Measuring 56 cm wide and 89 cm long, it was painted on silk. The title of this painting is written in seal script style on the upper part, with the scenery around the house depicted in vague colors on the middle part. The general composition of the painting puts emphasis on the right part, and the mountains and rocks show the strong contrast between black and white colors. The poems by Jeong Yeo-chang and Yu Ho-in are written on the lower part, along with the citations from the phrases by Jo Sik and Jeong Gu. This is a kind of documentary painting because it was painted based on the record on the house rather than on its actual landscape. It shows very well the painting style of An Gyeon School of the 17th century. It is regarded as a highly valuable material for the research on the painting style of An Gyeon School and on the Confucian culture of the Joseon Dynasty.
