Description

The Amitabha Buddha Sutra is one of the three Pure Land sutras, along with the Infinite Life Sutra and the Sutra of the Meditation on the Buddha of Immeasurable Life. In this sutra, Sakyamuni Buddha speaks of Amitabha Buddha and the magnificence of the Pure Land, while saying also that it suffices to earnestly chant Amitabha’s name in order to become reborn in Paradise. This book is the first volume of the Hangeul edition of the same sutra, based on the Chinese translation by Kumarajiva of the Later Jin, published by Gangyeong Dodam (or Directorate of Buddhist Publications), in 1464 (the 10th year of King Sejo’s reign). Gangyeong Dogam is a royal agency publishing Hangeul sutras, established in 1461 (the 7th year of King Sejo’s reign). The book was printed on mulberry paper using woodblocks and measures 18.7cm by 30.4 cm in dimension. The quality of printing is excellent as though the book was printed with newly carved blocks. Although it is missing the cover page, the book, kept inside a Buddha statue, is greatly preserved. The printing blocks were carved based on the text written by An Hye, a renowned calligrapher of the time. This book, one of the very few surviving copies of the Amitabha Buddha Sutra published by Gangyeong Dogam, is considered invaluable.
