Description
Yeongbojeon Pavilion was built by members of the Jeonju Choe and Geochang Sin clans who settled in the area during the local administrative reforms carried out in the mid- to late fifteenth century. It was renovated in 1635 (the 13th year of the reign of King Injo) after the Imjin War (1592-1598). It is regarded as a representative structure of the Yeongam area, and was used - along with the nearby Jangamjeong Pavilion - as a meeting place by the local mutual aid society (donggye). It is unusually large for a private pavilion built in a rural area, and has an unusually high floor. It exhibits a unique composition, with a seperate room in the rear side of the floor. It is regarded as a valuable heritage by scholars interested in the history of the development of Korean pavilions, particularly with regard to its door and window frames, balustrade, ikgong (the bird wing-shaped brackets that support the eaves, hwaban (the beams forming the main part of the bracket system), and daegong (a short supporting column set up on a cross beam) among other notable features.
