Description

A placenta jar was used to contain the placenta and umbilical cord of a newborn prince or princess; a stone placenta tablet, which records the name and the birthday of the baby, was buried together with the jar. These two placenta jars date back to the Joseon Period. The outer jar has height of 42.5 cm, mouth diameter of 25 cm, and base diameter of 25.3 cm. On the other hand, the inner jar has height of 27.6 cm, mouth diameter of 10.6 cm, and base diameter of 11.7 cm. The two jars have almost the same shape. The lid of the jar looks similar to that of a cooking pot, and there are four holes drilled on the knob. These holes were used in connecting the lid with the four links on the upper body to fix the lid. The mouth is wide and rolled outward, whereas the body gradually narrows from the wide shoulder; thus providing a neat, voluminous overall shape. White porcelain glaze with light blue tone thoroughly coats the surface to give it a misty gloss.
