Description

Choe Gwangji Hongpae is a document issued to Choe Gwangji to inform him that he had passed the state examination for the recruitment of high-ranking officials in 1389 (the 1st year of the reign of King Chang of Goryeo). Here, the term ‘hongpae’ refers to an examination pass certificate that was issued at the royal order. Choe, who was a member of the politically and economically influential Jeonju Choe clan, went on to serve a civilian official from the late Goryeo to the early Joseon period. The certificate mentions Choe’s name as a successful candidate in the state examination and the date of the examination (September 1389) and contains an impression of the royal seal. Made some 630 years ago, it is a rare and historically valuable example of an official document issued by royal order. Choe Gwangji Hongpae is known to be the only existing official document of its kind dating from the Goryeo period. As a complete certificate containing an impression of the royal seal, it is a valuable artifact which shows that this form of official document was inherited directly from Goryeo by the Joseon Dynasty.
