Description
This large white porcelain jar kept at the Busan Museum, measuring 52.6 centimeters in height, dates from the late seventeenth or early eighteenth century. It has been preserved relatively well, although it bears trace of repairs made to some fine cracks on the mouth and shoulder. Though slightly asymmetrical, it looks natural and imposing; while the evenly applied pale blueish, white-colored glaze creates a calm, classy impression. Its robust form and excellent production techniques have led researchers to assume that it was made at a government-run kiln sometime between the late seventeenth and early eighteenth century, indicating that Korea’s white porcelain production skills had reached full maturity by that time. It is also regarded as one of the best white porcelain jars made toward the end of the Joseon Period both in terms of its size and form and its refined production. The jar is considered worthy of designation and preservation as a Treasure in view of its rarity, good condition, harmonious aesthetic quality, refined glaze, and advanced firing technique.
