Description
The Stone Maitreya Buddha Triad in Jangchanggok Valley, Namsan Mountain, Gyeongju has been widely known as a work symbolical of the beliefs of Buddhism in the Three-Kingdoms period. It is comprised of the main Maitreya Buddha seated on the chair flanked by attendant Buddhas. It is known as the oldest of Buddha statues seated on the chair. The main Buddha displays a round, plump, benevolent face with the right hand held up, the fingers folded, and the left hand on the lap with fingers folded in gestures of abhaya mudra (relieving people of their fear, worries, and hardships) and vara mudra (making people’s wish come true). The two attendant Buddhas (about 1m tall each) wears a three-flower crown and hold objects symbolizing power and benevolence in the hands. Their chubby cheeks depict a calm smile, and the lower part of their robes is vividly portrayed.
