Description

Danggan were flagpoles on which flags (dang) were hoisted at the entrance of a temple to mark special occasions such as Buddhist ceremonies or prayers. The flagpoles were supported by two stone buttresses called dangganjiju. These simple, unadorned flagpole supports are located near Uiamho Lake, by the side of the road to Chuncheon Train Station from downtown Chuncheon. A two-tiered base stone lies between the two supports, of which the lower tier is carved with a circular pattern, the upper tier with 16 lotus petals. The tops of the flagpole supports are arched, and one of them retains traces of the holes used to fix the flagpole. Judging by the workmanship and the style of the lotus petals, it is thought that the supports were erected sometime during the middle of the Goryeo Dynasty.
