Description
Han Ho (pen-name: Seokbong, 1543-1605), a master of calligraphy during the Joseon Period, wrote and donated this album of excellent calligraphic works during a party with his friends in 1596 (29th year of King Seonjo’s reign). This calligraphy album consists of three parts, and all of them were written impromptu at the party. Han Ho put three Chinese characters of “Chuiryeon (秋日宴),” literally meaning “feast on an autumn day,” ahead of the original title of this album, showing its seasonal inspiration. In this album, Han collected poems that give a guide on how to live a short life happily. The name of its original owner, a member of Pungsan Ryu’s Clan, was written in small characters on the first page of this album. In addition, the list of friends who attended the party with him was provided at the end of the album. This album showed the friendship of Han Ho and the frailty of human life, which was brought to the fore sometime between the literati purge of Joseon during a chaotic period right after the Japanese invasion in the late 16th century.
