Description
Hongmu yeje (Rituals from the Hongwu Reign) is a book about ritual etiquette and obligation. After the Hongwu Emperor founded the Ming Dynasty of China, he summoned Confucian scholars to publish a book on rituals, and the original version of this book was one of them. The original version of Hongmu yeje was used for the ceremonies held by the Ministry of Rites from the end of the Goryeo Dynasty to the reign of King Taejong during the early Joseon Dynasty. Since many criticisms and different opinions were raised regarding the contents of the original version during the reign of King Sejong, however, the king ordered Heo Jo, a civil official in his court, to compile Gukjo oryeui (Five Rites of State) by consulting Hongmu yeje. The compilation and publication of Gukjo oryeui continued until its completion in 1474 (fifth year of King Seongjong’s reign), and it was used as the main reference book for rituals instead of Hongmu yeje. This book is still regarded as a valuable material in studying the ritual systems and diplomatic conditions of Joseon and China before the reign of King Seongjong in the late 15th century.
