Description
Gani byeogonbang (Treasure No. 2079) is a collection of prescriptions for the treatment of epidemics written in Chinese characters, accompanied by a Korean translation. It was compiled by medical officials such as GIM Sunmong, YU Yeongjeong and BAK Segeo at the behest of King Jungjong in 1525 (the 20th year of the reign of King Jungjong). This edition, kept at the National Hangeul Museum, was printed with Eulhae movable metal type (first made in 1455) sometime before 1578. The seal impression on its first page and the inscription on the rear face of the front cover state that it was presented by Chief Royal Secretary YUN Dusu (1533-1601) to GIM Jip (1610-?), a scholar at the Seonggyungwan, the country’s highest Confucian educational institution, in January 1578 (the 11th year of the reign of King Seonjo). Gani byeogonbang is known to be the oldest extant woodblock-printed book of its kind, of which only a few copies remain. Accordingly, it is considered a highly valuable cultural heritage from a bibliographical perspective.
