This Stone Seated Bodhisattva was transferred from Eodan-ri, Gujeong-myeon, Myeongju-gun to Gangneung Municipal Museum and designated as a Treasure in 1992, following the closure of Hansongsa Temple in Gangneung. Though the Bodhisattva is missing its head and right arm, it is a rare example of its kind, exhibiting a lively form and vivid sculptural techniques. The left arm is turned to the inside and placed on the left leg. Its missing right arm was presumably placed in the same position as the left arm. The statue is seated with the left leg turned toward the inside and the right leg outside, a posture only found in Bodhisattva statues. It was probably an assistant Bodhisattva for the principal Buddha statue of a temple. The light-looking robe draped across the left shoulder and the realistic necklace are beautifully carved. This stone seated Bodhisattva is atypical in terms of its posture and realistic carving. It is an excellent work of art of the Goryeo Period, and was carved with a similar technique to the Stone Seated Bodhisattva from the Hansongsa Temple Site, Gangneung (National Treasure No. 124), which is kept in Chuncheon National Museum.
