Description

Byeogyeok sinbang (Prescriptions to Prevent Epidemics) is a medical book compiled by Heo Jun (1546-1615), a royal physician, in 1613 (fifth year of the reign of King Gwanghaegun of the Joseon Dynasty). When an epidemic similar to today’s scarlet fever swept the country and claimed numerous lives, King Gwanghaegun ordered Heo Jun to establish proper countermeasures. Along with other physicians of Naeuiwon (Palace Physicians’ Court), Heo Jun investigated the origins and symptoms of the epidemic and compiled this book to explain the diagnostics, remedies, preventions, and prescriptions. This book is still used as a reference book of Eastern Medicine to cure scarlet fever. Currently, the Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies holds three books of Byeogyeok sinbang, all of which are the same edition.
