Description

This three-story stone pagoda was moved from the former site of a temple in the Ha-ri district of Yeoju to its current location in 1958 along with the three-story stone pagoda at Chang-ri. The pagoda consists of a single- layer stylobate and a three-story body. The stylobate is engraved with pillars in each corner and the middle of the top stone is carved with two-tier border patterns to support the core stone of the first story. Each core stone and roof stone is made out of a separate piece of stone, each corner of which is carved with pillar patterns. The roof stone has a four-tier cornice. The horizontal eaves curve slightly upward on each edge. Overall, the methodical piling technique and the sense of proportion indicate that it was erected in the mid-Goryeo rather than the early Goryeo period. A unique type of sarira niche was found in the first story of the pagoda during its relocation, i.e. the middle of the upper part of the body is engraved with a 3cm-high band in which two holes are carved. Moreover, the contacting part of the roof stone also has deep grooves. In most pagodas, only the upper part of the body is carved with big holes to contain sarira. However, this pagoda has more holes for sarira than is customary.
