Description

Buried underground for a long time, this 3.5 meter-high stone lantern was recently dug up and subjected to restoration work before being re-erected. The lower part of the lantern's pedestal is decorated with the carving of lotus petals facing downward, with the upper part decorated with upturned lotus petals. The middle part has an hourglass shape. The part forming a light chamber is octagonal, and it has eight “windows” for light on each facet. Each of the angled corners is decorated with carved flower. The roof stone has a lower surface with a broad prop. The inscription made between the windows states that it was built in 891 (the 5th year of the reign of Queen Jinseong). As the only Silla lantern with such inscription, it is considered a very important material in the study of Korean stone lanterns.
