Description

Danggan were flagpoles on which flags (dang) were hoisted at the entrance to a temple to mark special occasions such as Buddhist ceremonies or prayers. The flagpoles were generally supported by two stone buttresses called danggan jiju. These two flagpole supports are at the former site of Daetongsa Temple in Gongju. Their inner surfaces facing each other are unadorned, while the outer surfaces are carved with thick belt-like designs in a clear-cut manner along the edges. The head parts of the flagpole supports are rounded, and the inner side of each has quadrangular holes in which a flagpole was inserted. Although the base stone of the supports and the lower part of one support were damaged by bombs during the Korean War, on the whole, it has retained its simple style. The supports could be regarded as relics of the Baekje Period given the presence of other Baekje relics found in this area; however, judging from the panel decoration design carved on the base stone, it is believed to have been made during the Unified Silla Period.
