Description
This certificate was issued to Jin Chung-gwi, who served as county magistrate of Uiju, by Gongsin Dogam (Directorate of Meritorious Subjects) in 1395 (fourth year of the reign of King Taejo of the Joseon Dynasty). Written on mulberry paper, this certificate measures 634 cm wide and 30.8 cm long and has the shape of a scroll with a wooden rod at one end. About 15-18 characters are written on each line; the certificate includes the names of 106 meritorious subjects. At the end of the certificate are the names and ranks of 15 officials from Ijo (Ministry of Personnel) and Gongsin Dogam who participated in the issuance of this document. It carries the signatures of 10 of the 15 officials. Thirty gyeol (unit of measurement for land used in Joseon) of land and three slaves were awarded to each meritorious subject whose parents and spouse were also given honorary titles. In addition, the descendants of such subjects were permitted to serve in government posts without taking the state examination. This certificate, with the wooden rod intact and whose overall condition is good, is of great significance in the study of meritorious subjects contributing to the foundation of the Joseon Dynasty.
