Description
Made during the Goryeo Dynasty, this vase has height of 33 cm, mouth diameter of 5.2 cm, and bottom diameter of 11 cm. It is a typical vase from the Goryeo Dynasty, with an erected opening and a wide shoulder that gradually narrows toward the base and subsequently widens slightly as it reaches the base. On the surface, the vase has the pattern of several thin apricot and bamboo trees waving in the wind. In between the plants, three cranes -- which are dynamically portrayed as flying downward or upward or standing on the ground -- are expressed intricately in black and white inlay work. Muddy water has permeated into minute cracks on some parts of the surface. The inner side of the heel is carved, and part of the heel has been damaged. The shape and pattern of the vase suggest that this artifact was made in the late 12th century. It was excavated from Hadong, Gyeongsangnam-do, along with the fragments of a celadon cup. A similar vase is currently in the possession of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston in the United States, but this vase, which has been repaired in the mouth area, is the only one that is in perfect condition.
