Description

Nokgwon is an official certificate for recognizing a person as a meritorious subject. In the 37th year of King Seonjo’s reign (1604), this nokgwon was offered to Cheongwongun Sim Dae (1546-1592), who protected a wagon carrying King Seonjo on his way to seek refuge in Uiju during the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592. Sim Dae passed the civil service national examination in the 5th year of King Seonjo’s reign (1572) and escorted the King to Uiju while safeguarding the King's wagon when the Japanese Invasion broke out. He served as the Provincial Governor of Gyeonggi-do and fought to recapture Seoul as the capital with citizens but died on the battlefield against the Japanese forces. The royal certificate states that Sim Dae is being conferred the title of second-rank meritorious subject in recognition of his contributions to escorting the King to Uiju safely during the Japanese Invasion, of his attempt to recapture the capital after he became the Provincial Governor of Gyeonggi-do, and of his death during a battle against the attacking Japanese soldiers. The reward is to draw a portrait of him, hand it down from generation to generation, and promote his parents, wife, and children and him by two ranks from his official post. In case he has no children, his nephew or niece is to be promoted by one rank, his first son and his descendants are to succeed his government position in perpetuity, and 9 servants, 80 gyeol (measure of land used in the Joseon Dynasty) of farming land, 7 silver coins, and 1 roll of silk fabric are to be offered. This royal certificate has been relatively well-preserved, providing valuable information in studying the meritorious subjects of the Joseon Dynasty and Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592.
