Description

Stupa symbolizes the grave of monks and enshrines bone cremains or sarira. This stupa can be seen after walking 200 m northwest along the slope on the rear side of Muujeon Hall at Seonamsa Temple. As the largest of the three stupas in the temple compound, it consists of octagonal parts. The lower stylobate with cloud patterns lies on the octagonal foundation stone, with a supporting stone having symbolic images of the elephant’s eyes inserted between them. The middle and upper stylobates are made of a single piece of stone and decorated with carvings of wave and lotus patterns. The body of the stupa is made in the shape of a ladder. The front side has the pattern of Phoenix-engraved door and Inwang (guardian spirit) image on each of the right and left sides, with the rear side carved in the design of a door with knobs. The thin, wide roof stone has a flower decoration at every corner of the octagonal eaves. This stupa is made in the typical octagonal style of the United Silla Dynasty. Based on the construction technique of various parts, it seems to have been built in the early Goryeo Dynasty.
