Description
Jabi doryang chambeop is a Buddhist ritual of repenting of one’s sins while reading Buddhist scriptures. It consists of prayers for mercy and charity. People believe that, by performing this ritual, they will be absolved from their sins, blessed with good luck, and freed from all pains. The Buddhist sutra above originates with Emperor Wu of the Liang Dynasty of China, who first prepared it for his wife, Queen Chi. After that, it was revised to 10 volumes by several Buddhist monks. This book corresponds to a revised version wherein some mistakes were corrected and reorganized in the Yuan Dynasty of China. It was made into one by binding volumes 1 to 5 out of 10 volumes and printed on mulberry paper. It measures 37.3 cm long and 24 cm wide. The end of this book bears no publication date. Since it is the same copy as Yenyeom mita doryang chambeop, Volumes 1-5 and Volumes 6-10 (Treasure No. 949), however, it is considered to have been published in the 5th year of King Seongjon’s reign (1474) by Queen Jeonghui, wife of King Sejo, to pray for the soul of Han as well as the deceased Queen Consort Gonghye of King Seongjong. Even though the cover of this book is missing, it is considered one of the best wood block-printed books of the Joseon Dynasty.
